Rooted in Kent’s Woodland Heritage About Eco Timber Works

At Eco Timber Works, our craft begins deep within Kent’s ancient woodlands. Every piece of furniture we make starts with locally sourced timber — cut, seasoned, and shaped by hand using methods that have been part of Kent’s rural tradition for centuries.

We work primarily with coppiced wood, harvested through one of the oldest and most sustainable woodland practices known in Britain. By continuing this time-honoured technique, we help preserve a system that has supported both craftsmanship and wildlife in our county for generations.

What is Coppiced Timber? About Eco Timber Works

Coppicing is the ancient art of cutting trees at their base, allowing them to regrow naturally from the same root system. This traditional process produces strong, straight stems ideal for furniture making, and can be repeated indefinitely without harming the woodland.

Each time a tree is coppiced, new shoots emerge, rejuvenating the woodland and encouraging a diverse range of plant and animal life. This approach makes our work not just sustainable, but actively beneficial for the local ecosystem.

By sourcing timber this way, we ensure that every item we create is eco-friendly, renewable, and rooted in the responsible management of Kent’s forests.

  • From Woodland to Workshop

Once harvested, the timber is carefully seasoned and air-dried before being shaped in our workshop in Smeeth, near Ashford. We use a blend of chainsaws and hand tools, following the natural form of each log rather than forcing it into uniformity.

This respect for the wood’s natural shape means that no two pieces are ever identical. Every table, bench, or chopping board is guided by the unique curves and grain of the timber, giving each creation its own distinct personality.

Crafted with Purpose Inspired by Nature

Our work is as much about conservation as it is about craftsmanship. By using locally coppiced timber, we help maintain Kent’s traditional woodlands and reduce the need for imported materials.

Each item we make carries the story of where it came from — a sustainable heritage, a living woodland, and the skill of the maker. When you choose a piece from Eco Timber Works, you’re not just buying furniture; you’re supporting an ancient craft and a thriving local ecosystem.
